The H.L. Hunley, a Confederate submarine built in Mobile, became the first submarine in history to sink an enemy ship. After torpedoing in Charleston Harbor, the Hunley sank and did not return to port until recovered in Aug. 2000.

The Little Foxes, a play written by Lillian Hellman set in Demopolis that chronicled a family's selfish pursuit of wealth, opened in Broadway’s National Theatre. The play starred Tallulah Bankhead, who was from Huntsville.
Navy Captain Jeremiah Denton Jr., a native of Mobile, was the first to disembark from the first planeload of US POWs released after the Vietnam War. Denton later (1981) served as the first Republican US Senator from AL since Reconstruction.
Alabama Astronaut Jan Davis returned to Earth on the Space Shuttle Discovery after the completion of 130 orbits.
The legislature established the Tuskegee Normal School for Colored Teachers, now Tuskegee University. Through the leadership of Booker T. Washington and others, Tuskegee rose to national prominence during the industrial education movement.
